Wordpress 2.6.3 EASY Upgrade Guide
Posted on November 16th, 2008 by Web Freak under BloggingSo are you annoyed by the message in your dashboard about “WordPress 2.6.3 is available! Please update now.” ?
WordPress 2.6.3 upgrade was made available by development team few days ago, and for me.. Being a Web Freak, I have to take the responsibility that my readers do not face difficulties while upgrading, so here is what I have:
This upgrade is really simple and involves changes to just one file – class-snoopy.php and update to version.php file to reflect the upgrade. In this article I will show couple ways you can use to simplify the process and ensure secure blog.
Upgrade Using WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin
I have tested upgrade from 2.6.2 and 2.6.1 to the latest 2.6.3 version using this plugin and entire process was smooth and completely painless.
Highly recommended you install WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin and save yourself a lot LOT and LOT of trouble! Just don’t forget to always create your own backup and don’t rely on built in function that comes with this plugin.
Always Backup First – Upgrade Second!
Manual Upgrade Using FTP
this is the most common form of upgrade and since this version only requires upload of 2 files – it is also very simple to do.
I have tested the process on about 4 of my blogs with no issues. And here is how:
- Download the 2 files that need to be updated on your blog. Dev blog provides direct links to those files.
- Use FTP client to connect to your host and navigate to /path/to/blog/wp-includes/ directory.
- Upload the 2 files: class-snoopy.php and version.php to wp-includes directory on your blog.
- Login to your blog and verify that upgrade is reflected by version on the bottom of your blog.

hey, nice guide but doesn’t wordpress come with an “automatic” update feature? :S

You’re Welcome
Isnt it easier to use wordpress automatic upgrade option in the dashboard and it comes bundled with wordpress you dont have to install any plugin for auto upgrade feature- am i going wrong somewhere?
Is it easy to update with “Fantastico De Luxe”? They haven’t updated it yet and I’m not sure if I want to do it manually… I also don’t want to wait too much longer before I update.
If you do from that, you wont be able to use your own DB
I prefer to upgrade manually because i have try before use automatic upgrade but my site become error, i don’t know why.. and also i have try to use fantastico to upgrade i got same problem.. pyeuh.. finally i delete all files and install fresh files but i backup first all my db and after i do export again.. i have no problem anymore.
i heard that many people meet some problem when upgrade their WP. Your tips might be helpful. Thanks
